Equipment : shower, solarium, grain storage room etc

The quality and practicality of equipment make daily tasks easier and improve horse care. They are also important for the economical management of an equestrian structure.

Hay and fodder storage

Nowadays, hay and straw are usually conditioned in large bales. Handling them is easier if they are stored horizontally.

Hay is therefore stored in a barn type building, with easy-access for delivery trucks, and located not too far from the stables. A compromise needs to be found on the distance from the stables : when located further away, the risk of fire in the stables is decreased (it is recommended to locate the hay storage ≥ 8m away from other buildings), when located nearer, there is a gain of time in journeys to and fro.

Even when using small bales, storing them in a hayloft over the stables is not advisable due to the risk of fire.

The size of the storage premises for hay and feed should accomodate at least a month’s supply to avoid running out. When there is the capacity for several months storage it can save money spent on feed and fodder.

The calculations for the sizing are based on the following :

  • Maximum storage height 4m for safety reasons.
  • Required volume per horse per month : 8m3 (i.e 2m2 of ground space and a height of 4m) when traditional forage and bedding (straw and hay) are used.

A concrete or tarmac surface will contribute to keeping the hay in good conditions. Adequate ventilation is also essntial to keep hay which is living material.

Feed storage

With regard to concentrated feeds, storing in silos enables you to buy bulk, and to save pennies on the feed. There is a choice to be made between :

  • An indoor silo (less expensive) or outdoor (not as attractive), depending on available space, access facilities...
  • One large capacity silo or several smaller silos enabling the storage of different types of feed.

If you’re using a grain crusher, it is not advisable to have it in the stable itself or too close, as it is noisy and a source of dust. The grain cooker requires a water supply , and can be placed near the stables.

Horse shower area

Fitting an outdoor horse shower area is inexpensive and very useful. When desingning a new building, an indoor horse wash area can be included in the plans.

So that the horses do not walk on the hose pipes, which could perforate them, it is a good idea to attach the hoses (equipped with a tap-swirl) to an overhead hose-boom which should be high enough not to frighten the horse underneath.

Drainage is required to keep the area clean : direct the floor surface towards a runoff connected to the wastewater evacuation system.

A covered shower area gives the user more comfort, using warm water gives the horse more comfort.

Solarium

Drying the horse off in an adjustable height solarium fitted with infra-red halogen lamps, allows you to use the shower even in winter, as it prevents the horse from getting cold whilst drying off.

It requires a power supply and an area designed to keep the horse straight and under the lamps while he is drying.
