Thoughts on the design of tomorrow’s buildings : eco-responsible buildings
Agricultural technical institutes have combined their efforts within a Combined Technological Network (CTN) « Farm buildings of the future » to offer ideas for these farming buildings. Altough it may be difficult to imagine how fast the expectations of the farming world and society will evolve over the next few years, buildings are not just a question of materials used, and they will become the object of the questions which arise today. Tomorrow’s buildings will be the result of compromise between investment and profitability, work and safety, animal well-being and productivity, environment and energy-saving. What is the combined Technological network « husbandry buildings of the future » ?
The Combined technological network (CNT) « Husbandry buildins of the futeur » has developed a wide network of competencies and exchanges on husbandry buildings (horses, pigs, ruminants and poultry). It promotes the emergence of projects between the actors of research, development, and teaching. Between 2014 and 2018, one of the aims of the network was to design and build virtual buildings for each of the sectors.

Virtual building prototypes
Each prototype put forward is optimized with regard to one of the following 3 priorities :
- The energy efficient, high performance building : priority « well-reasoned costs » to manage the overheads linked to the building.
- The eco-responsible building : priority « environment » to minimize the environmental impact of the building.
- The precision building : priority « precision » to integrate new cutting-edge technologies
Thus each prototype offers a range of technical solutions optimised with regard to the the priority aimed for, and the type of husbandry adopted. They are therefore not considered as THE only reference for what might be the buildings of the future. The prototypes will necessarily give rise to reactions of support or to constructive criticism. They do not propose a complete break from existing types of building, but rather offer the highest optimisation possible.
Each and every farmer will find sources to be adapted to his particular situation. In fact, the final choices remain with project promoters to build and equip buildings to suit the needs of their farm and their aspirations.
Priority « environment » or eco-responsible buildings
« Eco-responsible » buildings aim to reduce the environmental impact of farm buildings during their construction, and subsequent use. They emphasize environmental respect in every aspect :
- Integration in the landscape
- Preserving ressources in quality and quantity : water, air climate (greenhouse gases and carbon footprint).
- Reducing pollution due to noise and smell
- Connection with the territory
The eco-construction approach will guide choices made for this type of building, from thei design/ construction, their use through to their ultimate dismantling. This automatically places them within an economical approach. The idea of eco-responsibility also integrates the issues of well-being, health and safety both for Man and animals.
Eco-responsible buildings : « environment » prototype presented by the IFCE
The general aims of the prototype are recycling water and sewage, to managing energy and the ambient atmosphere in the building and the choice of building materials.
The prototype is based on a suburban riding school type structure for 1 LU (labour unit, i.e. the equivalent of a full time job on a farm) for 16 horses. The main barn type building, offers modular accomodation which can be either inside or outdoors, and either individual or collective. The prototype also includes two quarantine loose boxes and a storage building.
Building design based on 2 objectives
Aim 1 : limit the environmental impact
Fistly, solar energy is favored by using photovoltaic solar panels, a solar water-heater, or a glass roof allowing natural lighting for the stables. A vegetated roof (green roof) was also chosen for its thermal inertia. Ventilation is provided naturally via a chimney effect. There is a water recovery system from the roof which provides water for the horses’ shower and for watering of the arenas. Water used for washing is also recovered and treated.
Secondly the manure is recycled and given added value on site. An eco-manure digester is set up near the stables with a recycling capacity of 1 tonne per day to transform the manure to compost (compliant to the NF U44-051 standard for trade). A recovery system for leachates and waste water is also an essential item for controlling the impact on the environment of the structure. These waters can be treated by the eco-digestor.
Finally, the choice of building materials should take into account local supplies and short distribution circuits.
Aim 2 : improving the horses’ living conditions
The loose boxes are adjacent to a stabilised free-access exercise area to promote greater locomotor activity. These exercise areas, like the loose boxes are modular, thanks to moveable fencing and partitions. Thus the prototype enables to switch from individual to collective accomodation of the horses. Forage is permanantly available with a system of 1 hayrack for two boxes, each containing a round bale of hay. The distribution is carried out securely from the aisle.
